EU crypto licences under MiCA: 380 firms authorised in 23 months, 111 in Germany

The EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation, MiCA, requires firms that offer crypto services in the EU to be authorised by a national regulator. Once authorised in one country, a firm can serve customers across the bloc. The European Securities and Markets Authority keeps an interim register of every authorised firm, and the Bitminer.io licences ledger tracks it.

By the end of October 2026, the register listed 380 authorised firms across 27 countries.

A slow start

The first four authorisations came on December 30, 2024, all in the Netherlands, including MoonPay’s European arm. They were the only authorisations of 2024, and the pace stayed slow through the first half of 2025.

The large exchanges and brokers arrived through 2025. OKX, Crypto.com and Bitpanda were authorised in Malta on January 27. Bybit followed in Austria in May, Coinbase in Luxembourg and Kraken in Ireland in June, Gemini in Malta in August, and Revolut in Cyprus in October.

In all, 147 firms were authorised in 2025.

Deadlines

MiCA let firms already operating under national rules keep going for a transitional period, which each country could set but which ends no later than July 1, 2026. Authorisations bunched up before the deadlines. December 2025 brought 44, and June 2026 brought 75, the busiest month in the register, followed by 33 in July.

So far in 2026, through October, 229 firms have been authorised.

Germany’s banks

Germany leads with 111 authorised firms, more than France, the Netherlands and Cyprus combined. Most are not crypto companies. Of the 111, 76 are banks, many of them local cooperative and savings banks. Across the whole register, 93 of the 380 are banks.

After Germany come France with 36, the Netherlands with 29, Cyprus with 25 and Malta with 23. Malta is home to the EU operations of OKX, Crypto.com, Gemini and Blockchain.com.
